In March 2018, Youth Voice members participated in consultation for contribution to Homeless Link’s ‘Young and Homeless’ Report. Youth Voice members shared their experiences and answered questions discussing issues surrounding homelessness that affected them directly. These included the welfare system, housing and homelessness support services and health related issues.
The ‘Young and Homeless’ Report was published in Monday 16th April and can be viewed on the Homeless Link website by clicking here. A short key findings document was additionally produced, this can be viewed here.
Key findings of the research include:
- Significant impact of Universal Credit and other welfare benefit changes on young people’s ability to access and sustain accommodation (e.g. 90% reported that sanctions were having an impact) (see chapter 3)
- 55% of respondents reported increased demand for their services, 45% reported increase in young men sleeping rough (see chapter 1)
- Difficulty young people face in accessing services (e.g. 58% said it is difficult for young people to access emergency accommodation, see chapter 5)
- Wide range of prevention initiatives available but improvement needed (e.g. 37% said range of prevention services was inadequate – see chapter 4)
Jennifer Harris, Research Manager shared: “Thank you all again for helping us to develop this crucial evidence by taking the time out of your busy schedules to complete the survey. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the organisations and individuals who provided additional help with the project, and of course to the young people with experiences of homelessness who were involved with the research, for taking time to talk to us and generously sharing your stories. We couldn’t have done it without you all!”
Thank you to Homeless Link and Youth Voice members!
